What Are The Functions Of CNA?

If you have ever thought you may want to have a career in the health care industry, then you surely know about doctors, nurses, psychologists and the like. If you are really gun-ho on becoming a medical professional, then you know you need to start from the bottom, and work your way up.

That means you will have to become a licensed CNA, or Certified Nursing Assistant. Now I'm sure if you have done your homework you already understand the criteria for becoming a CNA, the licensing fees, the courses you need to attend, the guidelines you need to follow etc. There is a seemingly countless amount of information out there, and it can be tough at times to get what you want or need.

However, in the pages upon pages of details you have scoured, you possibly did not find the most pertinent information on becoming a CNA.. Which is.. What specifically are the responsibilities of a CNA?

For beginners, CNA's are the lowest members of the medical profession. This does NOT suggest they are the least important! Conversely, during your time as a CNA you will offer much needed assistants to the doctors and nurses above you, in order that everything may run smoothly. If not because of the effort of CNAs in the country, many nursing homes, and other assisted living facilities, would no longer be possible, and many elderly people would be with no recourse, and no one to care for them and make sure they were fine. CNAs are also found in our schools as acting nurses, aiding our children with their wounds.

The actual commitments of a CNA will differ greatly from state to state, but there is an overall outline you can expect to follow. You can expect that during your time as a CNA you will be accountable for the following things:

Everyday Patient Care:

Your first and most important duty as a CNA, is the day to day care of patients under your attention. This will consist of, but may not be limited to, these tasks; feeding the patient, preparing menus for the patient, getting the patient dressed each morning and undressed at nighttime, changing the bedpan for the patient, helping the patient in bathing, or arranging to go out on a trip, preparing exercise programs, assisting during the exercise programs, taking the vital signs of the patient, and even measuring out and giving patients their medications (this last one will differ significantly on the state you are in and the requirements you needed to become a CNA to begin with. )

Record Keeping:

The next most important responsibility you will have as a CNA is keeping good records and files. You absolutely must adhere to the guidelines given to you during training, so that the doctor, other nurses, and other CNAs can properly take care of the patient once your shift is over and it is time for you to go home.
