I regularly write about the benefits that technology is bringing to our rising life expectancy. I also bring up that the elderly are quite often victimized by their own outdated expectations; not knowing that they can usually live not only longer, but better. A common beliefs based on past experience and insight is that the features of technology are concentrated only on young people. In fact, technology companies are learning that senior citizens now control a huge part of the disposable income, and they are rushing to meet their needs and dreams.
The 50-and-over-crowd will be about one-third of the population of the United States and will spend more than younger shoppers by an estimated $1 trillion in 2010. Many of us will respond by saying, "They are talking about other senior citizens." However, we must be aware that we can still reap the advantages of this happening if we keep our eyes open for them.
Senior citizens should be interested in the emergence of a senior technology economy for 2 reasons:
1. It will mean a better quality of life for us. When we look hopefully at our current circumstances, we will see a much different picture for aging than our parents did. As an example, the Internet is, primarily, free. Optimistic people are likely to use this inexpensive resource to engage in interesting lives.
2. Seniors can make money longer and more easily. Income can be earned working at home by means of personal computers and the Internet. Moreover, as the population ages, an increasing number of the business economy is managed by senior citizens.
I am familiar with a man who retired from a "9 to 5" business when he was 60 years of age. He was involved in buying and managing a certain kind of specialized equipment for the last 20 years of his career. Immediately upon his "retirement" he was approached by a vendor of that kind of equipment and offered a very rewarding position selling it, on his own schedule, with a company car and all other costs paid. He traveled with his wife (whenever he wanted to) at the vendor's cost. When he wanted to stay home he used the telephone and Internet to communicate and do paperwork. Why did that vendor pay him so well to advance from being a consumer to being a seller? They told him candidly that it was because a lot of the big buying decision-makers for their equipment were his friends, senior citizens or approaching senior citizenship, and they believed him for that reason.
The possibilities for making money while working in your pajamas are ample and possibly lucrative. The opportunities are springing up much quicker than we can explore them. We just need to move beyond our outmoded thoughts and expectations about aging and begin surfing!
