Sometimes, bad credit is a result of irresponsible budgeting. But it often occurs because of unexpected financial situations. Any day you may have all your bills current, and the next you could become disabled or lose your job. And when you fall behind on your debts, it will wreak havoc on your credit score.
Credit restoration companies say that they can get rid of bad entries from your credit rating report. But did you know that you can really have entries removed yourself cheaper? There are two ways you may be able to get negative things removed from your report, which may be the best method on how to improve credit score.
First, you could do a dispute with the bureaus. The FCRA (Fair Credit Reporting Act requires credit bureaus to investigate any item on your report that you dispute. If the information is found to be false, inaccurate or unverifiable, it must be changed or taken from your report. The bureaus have thirty days after they receive notice of the dispute to complete an investigation.
If there is any inaccurate information on your credit report, a dispute is warranted. Some people have had success disputing items that were really accurate, including collections, repossessions and judgements. If such items are not verified by the creditor (or the court in the case of judgments) within the limit for investigation, they must be taken off.
If you do dispute a correct entry, simply write a letter to each of the credit bureaus saying that you dispute that entry. But keep in mind that if the entry is verified, it will stay on your report. And if the company verifies the data after the 30-day limit, the credit bureau may reinstate the entry so long as they notify you at least 5 days before doing so.
Secondly, you may negotiate with companies. Handling creditors can be scary, especially if you're not on good terms with them. But speaking to your creditors directly might help you get negative data removed from your report.
If you just have a couple of late payments, a creditor may be willing to remove the derogatory info once you've resumed a regular payment schedule. If you've experienced repossession or experienced a collections account, paying in full could persuade them to remove the derogatory entry. Requests to remove late payment information may be made after you've gotten your account current. But if you're wishing for removal of a collection or repossession, it's better to negotiate a deal before you pay anything.
There's no guarantee that disputing information on your credit report or negotiating with a creditor will get bad things taken from your record. If it doesn't, the best method you can use is try to build up some positive information on your record.
The first thing you want to do once trying to build a good credit score is bring delinquent accounts up to speed. Try to work out a deal with your creditors to achieve this, or speak with a credit counseling company. However, don't miss payments on current accounts to put money toward the ones that are past due. If it comes down to paying one or the other, keep the current account up to date.
After you've gotten all of your payments current, put a priority on keeping them current. Making your payments on schedule will raise your credit score, and as time passes, the good entries might override the bad.
